Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was on international duty with Senegal when he suffered a thigh injury during training.
The 28-year-old has returned to Stamford Bridge to undergo further tests, however Mendy is now expected to be out for the next Premier League game.
Frank Lampard's side host Southampton on Saturday, October 17, but Mendy is expected to be out for at least ten days.
That means Mendy could miss the match with the Saints, with either Willy Caballero or Kepa Arrizabalaga coming back into the team.
The Blues have a lot of games ahead of them in the next section of matches, with the Champions League getting under way.
Chelsea play their first match of the competition on October 20 against Sevilla, before they travel to Manchester United and then Krasnodar.
Mendy is expected to be back for the opening Champions League game of the season against the Spanish Europa League champions.
But the gloveman is a serious doubt for the game against the Saints.
