Barcelona confirmed on Thursday night that the club’s greatest ever player, Lionel Messi, will not be signing a new deal.
Subsequently, the Argentine would be playing his football somewhere other than the Camp Nou next season.
It will obviously be next to impossible for Barca to replace a player of the calibre of Messi and the Catalan outfit will have a torrid time of finding one to fill his boots.
On that note, sportbible.com took a look at five of the best offensive players who may go on to don Messi’s role at Barcelona.
1. Ansu Fati (Barcelona)
The 18-year-old is a prodigious young talent who has already had a sizeable impact at the senior level.
2. Memphis Depay (Barcelona)
The 27-year-old Netherlands international could become the club’s most important attacker in the absence of Messi.
3. Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund)
The Norweigan international has one of the most sought-after signatures in world football right now and is arguably, the best young striker in world football and one of the best strikers in the world in general.
3. Thiago Almada (Velez Sarsfield)
The young Argentinian talent looks like a player who has the ability to replace Lionel Messi on the right-wing for the Catalan club.
4. Francisco Trincao (Barcelona)
The 21-year-old’s style of play makes him a great long-term replacement for Lionel Messi.
5. Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan)
The 23-year old was linked with Barcelona last summer but stayed on to play an important role in Inter’s Serie A success last season but it remains to be seen whether Barca will have the finances to sign him from the Nerazzurri, as he will not come cheap.
