Mourinho Explains Why Paul Pogba Was Made Man United Captain

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho trusts that Paul Pogba was the right player to captain the team in the absence of Antonio Valencia.

Pogba was handed the armband for United’s Premier League opener against Leicester City on Friday night and he repaid his manager's belief by putting in a solid shift and scoring a penalty in the 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Valencia was not available for Friday's match and Mourinho insisted that the French midfielder was the obvious alternative to take the armband for the Premier League opener.

In an interview with Sky Sports before the match, Mourinho said:”Antonio Valencia is the captain but he is not here so Paul Pogba is captain.

“He has come up through the academy and he knows what the club means.”

Pogba will be hoping to find some consistent form for United this season as he bids to help Man Utd challenge for the Premier League title.

The Red Devils ended up second and without a trophy last season in Mourinho's second campaign in charge.

United will take on Brighton in their next Premier League match next weekend.
