Lionel Messi was heavily linked with Manchester City and a reunion with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.
However, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.made a shock U-turn as he refused to take the Spanish club to court over his contract release clause.
Messi, whose current Barcelona deal will expire next summer, will turn 34 by the time Guardiola’s side have the potential option to sign the Barca captain.
When Guardiola was asked if City would pursue the six-time Ballon d’Or winner next summer, he responded: “I don’t know. It’s a question for Leo Messi. I cannot talk about the intentions of other people.”
City have strengthened their squad this summer with the additions of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake.
Guardiola insisted that he is “more than satisfied” with the business City have done in the summer, despite the club still having the option to bring in new players before the window shuts.
