Thibaut Courtois has come out to say that he went AWOL because he didn’t want to disturb Chelsea’s pre-season by making the atmosphere toxic.
Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea for £35m this summer after failing to report for training at Cobham.
Maurizio Sarri had said he wanted to look into his eyes before agreeing to sell him but never showed after the 2018 World Cup.
And now, speaking while on international duty, Courtois has tried to explain his actions insisting he thought the transfer had been agreed as early as March.
“It makes me feel sad and obviously they don't know all the truth.
“I think in March the decision was already made and I thought the club would accept it.
“Then because the transfer was closed I did not show up because I thought it better not to disturb the team and the squad.
“If I did go there maybe, I didn't want to be toxic, so obviously it is a pity because I love Chelsea.
“I loved playing there and I am happy to have won two Premier Leagues, a league cup, and an FA Cup.
“Hopefully it will turn around,” he said.
Though Courtois sat on the bench for Real Madrid’s opening matches two La Liga games and the Super Cup win over Atletico Madrid, but the stopper did finally makes his debut in the 4-1 win over Leganes and is now expected to stay as the No 1.
And he disclosed that a big part of his decision to join Madrid was to be closer to his kids, who live in Madrid with his ex-girlfriend.
‘’I want to manage Chelsea… I have three or four offers on the table'’
“I will always look back with a happy feeling to Chelsea.
“I had a chance to go back to Spain to be closer to my kids. That was an important thing for me.
“I know that a lot of Chelsea fans will understand my decision.
“I wish them the best and I am happy to see that they have won their first four games and I hope they can go on and win the league,” Courtois added.
