The Banyana Banyana of South Africa battled Sweden's women's team in the first Group G match of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The encounter took place at WestPac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, on Sunday.
The South Africa women's team are appearing at the FIFA Women's World Cup for the second time in history, and are ranked 54th in the world. Meanwhile Sweden are ranked 3rd in the world, and have appeared a total of nine times in this competition.
After the match ended in stalemates in the first half, Banyana Banyana took the initiative in the second half, scoring the first goal of the match through Hildah Magaia three minutes into the second half.
With the South Africans ahead, and looking to upset the odds and snatch all three points in the game, Sweden got their acts together and levelled the scores in the 65th minute.
Both sides began to search for the win, and it was the hungrier of the teams who got the goal, a deserved one.
Peter Gerhardsson's ladies scored late in normal time to snatch the first three points in Group G.
Full-time.

To be fair, the South Africans held their own, they recorded the best shots on target so far in this tournament amongst the African representatives, and should have earned a point in the game if they'd concentrated till the very end.

“Every lady on that pitch deserves an applause honestly. People forget that Sweden is ranked 3rd in the world. We held our own in the hardest game in the group.
This Banyana Bayana side has matured so much over the years. I'm proud of that performance”

This Tweet from ‘THAT CHILD‘ is of the opinion that Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree, should have shuffled her strategy by introducing fresh legs in the middle of the park, and going out all-defensive as her team was ahead.
All Coach Desiree had to do was to to refresh the middle of the park, and apply Jose Mazibuko's 9-1-1 formation. Pack that bus.
