Ogochukwu Frank Onyeka, known professionally as Frank Onyeka, is a Nigerian football player who plays as a midfielder for Premier League side Brentford FC and the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles.
Frank Onyeka beginnings
Frank Onyeka was born in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Nigeria.
As his aptitude for football grew, he would join up with several local teams and participate in several grassroots tournaments. He was also on his school's football team and his talents saw people praise him and tout him as a future professional footballer.
He would eventually sign up with FC Ebedei, a club that plays in the Nigeria Nationwide League, the third tier of professional football in Nigeria (of which the NPFL – Nigerian Professional Football League is the first tier).
It was while playing for the team that his breakthrough to European football arrived via Denmark.
Frank Onyeka club career
FC Midtjylland, a top tier club in Denmark who have a developmental contract with several clubs in Africa including FC Ebedei in Nigeria, sent scouts to check out the next best thing.
Frank Onyeka stood out for them in 2016 and months later, the then 18-year-old defensive midfielder would move to Denmark as part of business dealings between both clubs. He could have been returned to Ebedei if he failed or moved on to another club if he was good enough but not the right fit for Midtjylland.
It was a big move for Onyeka, but he put his head down and worked to earn a place in the Danish Superliga side's starting XI.
Onyeka made his debut for Midtjylland in a Danish Cup game on 20 September 2017 and scored in that game. From there, he was included in their Superliga squad where he also made a goal-scoring debut on 9 February 2018.
He continued to be an important part of the Midtjylland squad in Denmark and in European competitions, playing in several roles across the midfield and on the right wing as well.
Brentford, managed by Danish manager Thomas Frank, would make him their first signing in 2021 when they got promoted to the Premier League.
Frank Onyeka national team career
Frank Onyeka convinced then Nigeria Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr in 2020 as he was a surprise inclusion in the squad that represented the three-time AFCON champions in international friendlies back in October 2020.
He made his full debut for the AFCON 2023 title hopefuls on 9 October 2020 in a 1 – 0 friendly loss to the Desert Foxes of Algeria. He has been capped seven more times since his first call-up and was a part of the team that participated in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, in which Nigeria was knocked out in the round of 16.
When fit, he is a part of the Super Eagles squad and is expected to make the upcoming AFCON 2023 qualifiers squads as well.
