On 22 September 2026, with Enyimba bottom of the NPFL after three straight defeats, the club's X account carried a message from its chairman. “The times have not been the most favourable,” Nwankwo Kanu admitted. “A win can be a propeller.”

Enyimba chairman in 2026 and the age question
It began in July 2023. Abia Governor Alex Otti approved the appointment, and Kanu replaced Felix Anyansi Agwu, who had held the seat for 24 years and presided over the club's CAF Champions League wins in 2003 and 2004.
The results since have been poor.
Enyimba finished 11th in the 2025/26 NPFL with 49 points. Enugu Rangers took the title. That drew Rangers level with the People's Elephants on nine league crowns. In February 2026 the club sat 14th, two points above the drop zone, according to Pulse Sports. Four coaches had already passed through in one campaign. The new season opened worse. Three defeats from three games were followed by a 3-2 home loss to Sporting Lagos, and Pulse Sports was still describing him as the chairman under pressure on 24 September, with no change announced by the Abia State Government.
Now the age. Most records give 1 August 1976, which makes him 50 today.
Olympedia, the Olympic statistics database, adds an errata note saying his real birth year may be two to nine years earlier, and that a September birth month has also been seen. No other date has been published. This page keeps the official one.
From Owerri to Ajax, Inter and the Arsenal Invincibles
Kanu started at Iwuanyanwu Nationale, winning the Nigerian league in 1992/93, and five goals at the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Japan were enough to earn him a move to Ajax.
In Amsterdam he won three Eredivisie titles and the 1994/95 Champions League. Inter paid around $4.7 million for him in 1996. That same summer he captained the U-23 side to Olympic gold in Atlanta. His two late goals in the semi-final helped Nigeria come from 3-2 down to beat Brazil 4-3 after extra time.
Then came the scare. A medical at Inter found a congenital aortic valve defect, and he had valve replacement surgery in Cleveland in November 1996, returning to the club only in April 1997 before a second operation in the United States in March 2014.
Arsenal signed him for about £4.15 million in February 1999. Eight months later he scored a 15-minute hat-trick at Chelsea to turn 2-0 into 3-2. Two league titles followed. So did two FA Cups. He was one of the 2003/04 Invincibles.
West Brom came next. At Portsmouth he scored the only goal of the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City. He left on 30 July 2012 after a wage dispute. He was African Footballer of the Year in 1996 and 1999. His 86 Super Eagles caps ended on 24 June 2010, after the World Cup in South Africa.
The Kanu Heart Foundation
He founded the Kanu Heart Foundation in 2000. By September 2025, when it marked its 25th anniversary with a novelty match at Dan Anyiam Stadium and a walk through Owerri on World Heart Day, the foundation said it had funded heart surgery for more than 700 people.
The motive is personal. “That is why I started the foundation,” he told Kenya's Nation in October 2025, speaking of his own operations.
The waiting list, he said, held more than 150 cases.
“My best trophy is seeing a child happy after undergoing a successful heart surgery,” he added.
Net worth, business, wife and family
The real figure is private. No audited figure exists. Legit.ng, in a September 2026 profile, put his estimated net worth at between $9 million and $15 million, without naming the source of that estimate. Treat it as a guide only.

Kanu is married to Amara Kanu. Marking their 13th anniversary in June 2017, she wrote “13 years to the day” over a photo of their traditional wedding, and Channels TV reported the couple have three children, as well as her book Healthy Living. In July 2024 they marked 20 years of marriage. He called her his “Queen.”
