Onazi lends support to CHAN Eagles ahead of Ghana clash

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has backed the Super Eagles B team to beat their counterparts from Ghana in the African Nations Championship qualifiers on Sunday.

The CHAN Eagles team have been in Abuja for some weeks preparing for this big fixture and Onazi, who has trained and seen the boys play, believes they have what it takes to beat the Ghanaians.

“I think the coaches have put together a very strong team that is capable of nicking the ticket at the expense of Ghana.

“I have seen the players, they are very fit and good enough to make Nigeria proud. I know coach Salisu Yusuf is well-informed in the domestic league and has assembled the best players in the league, and I can also see that the other members of the technical crew are positioned to help the head coach.”

The Eagles B side take on the Galaxies in the first leg in Cape Coast on Sunday, before the second leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on September 3.

The former Lazio man also featured in the team’s first friendly match against Mahanaim FC, which the Eagles came from two goals down to win 3-2.

He went on to add that it was a good test game for the boys considering the kind of opposition they will be facing.

“It was a very good test for the Eagles. They are preparing for a very big game and I liked the level of the game. We had to fight back to win.”

“I am actually here to collect my passport to travel and then I heard the team was training here. I like the opportunity to train at this high level and so I grabbed it. It is the best way to stay fit.”

Nigeria missed the last edition but in their last appearance lost to Morocco in the final, while Ghana last in the tournament in 2014.

The winner of this tie over two legs will be representing the WAFU B zone at the finals in Algeria next year – which is the seventh edition of the tournament.
