As the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) draws closer, fans are eager to know where and how to watch the tournament.
Recently, Africa’s largest satellite TV provider Multichoice, announced that the AFCON 2023 event will not be broadcast on its SuperSport channels on DStv and GOtv.
The news greeted African football fans with disappointment, especially Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana fans, with many left in total confusion as to what other options are available for streaming the matches of the tournament.
The Confederation of African Football, (CAF), had in November 2023 awarded the broadcasting rights for CAF competitions and events to Togo-based satellite TV, New World TV.
According to this deal, NWTV will hold the broadcasting rights for paid platforms and free-to-air channels for every CAF competition from 2023 to 2025.
The coverage of the various CAF competitions will extend to 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
At the time, CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the agreement, describing it as a mega deal that no other broadcaster was able to match.
“The Media Rights Agreement with New World TV is the biggest investment by a Pan-African broadcaster in CAF’s history,” said Motsepe.
“We are very proud to partner with such a globally competitive and innovative broadcasting company which has adapted quickly to the changing demands and viewing patterns of the modern football audience.
“New World TV is also introducing new ways of consuming video content through its strong partnerships with various mobile operators and its television networks.”
