Football clubs in Abuja: from FCT clubs to the grassroots

Two teams finished on 17 points at the Old Parade Ground in Area 10 last May. Only goal difference split them. Neurospark FC beat Crown Tee 3-1 to top their Nationwide League One group, while NAF FC thrashed King City 3-0 and still went home second.

That afternoon sums up football clubs in Abuja right now. Hungry. Crowded at the lower levels. Still waiting for a seat at the top table.

The NPFL: an empty chair

Start at the summit and the capital has nothing to show. None of the 20 clubs in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League was based in the FCT. The four sides promoted from the NNL this year, Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos, Doma United and Ranchers Bees, came from Lagos, Gombe and Kaduna.

Lagos now has two more top-flight addresses. Compare that with our guide to football clubs in Lagos.

The NNL: one door shuts, another opens

City FC carried the FCT flag in the second tier last season. At their kit launch in November 2025, rounded off by a 4-0 novelty win over NAF FC, the club named the FIFA Goal Project pitch at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium as its home. The chairman said the team belonged to the whole territory.

By December the tone was defiant. “I'm not worried about relegation, that is out of the question,” the City FC chairman told the club's end-of-year awards night, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

It happened anyway.

On 5 May 2026 the NNL board ratified the demotion of ten clubs to the NLO, and City FC were on the list alongside Sporting Supreme, the Bwari outfit already expelled in December 2025 for failing to honour two league matches, a breach that carries a five-year NNL ban for the club, its management and its officials.

Sporting Supreme have not vanished. They beat their own under-19 side 2-1 in the FCT final of the President Federation Cup on 6 May. Ejigbo City then knocked them out on penalties.

Then came the good news. Neurospark FC won two of three matches at the NLO playoffs in Lafia. That took the North Central ticket. In August the NNL confirmed them among eight promoted clubs.

“The NNL is one of the toughest leagues in Nigeria,” the FCT FA secretary warned the club's delegation. He also pledged support for an NPFL push.

The NLO and the grassroots ladder

NAF FC stay in the third tier after missing out on goal difference. King City were third on 11 points. Neurospark coach Sola Morakinyo was blunt even in victory: “We missed many scoring chances, so there is a lot of work to do.”

Area 3, the busiest address

Below the national leagues, the FCT FA runs its own pyramid. The 2026 Division One League ran at the Area 3 pitch from 13 July to 5 September. Jay One FA edged Basic Football Club 1-0 in the final. The prize is a place at the 2027 NLO playoffs. Coach Ezeude Justin, also chief executive of the Jay One Football Academy, was not celebrating for long. “There is no rest at all until we go there and get the ticket for the NLO,” he said.

That academy-to-club route matters. Our guide to football academies in Abuja maps several.

The same pitch hosted the second FCT FA Women's Inter-Area Council Tournament. Bwari beat Kuje 1-0 in the final on 5 September. “Football is our food,” FCT FA first vice-chairman Salihu Kolo said.

The women's game: a hard season in Bwari

Naija Ratels opened the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership with a goalless draw against Ibom Angels at Bwari Stadium, the 3,000-capacity FCT FA ground with hybrid artificial grass that the NNL approved in 2023.

“You can always expect some lapses when you are grooming a young side,” coach Sabo Okala said.

The lapses never stopped. A 2-0 defeat to Edo Queens in Benin City on Matchday 15 left the Ratels on five points from 14 games. They drop to the NWFL Championship. Edo Queens went on to win the Super Six.

Our view

Abuja does not lack clubs, pitches or ambition. It lacks staying power.

The past twelve months brought one second-tier club relegated, another thrown out and a women's side sent down, and against all that a single newcomer promoted, which leaves Neurospark carrying a heavier load than most promoted sides as the FCT waits for a club it can build a top-flight dream around. If they settle, players coming through Area 3 get a clearer path upward, and perhaps a shot at the wages in our rundown of the Nigeria league's highest-paid players.
