Mamelodi Sundowns won the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League in dominant fashion having won more games, and scored more goals than every other team.
Cape Town City ended Mamelodi Sundowns 53-match unbeaten league run and prevented a first-ever invincible DStv Premiership campaign.
The Capetonians beat the Brazilians at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in both side's last game of the season thanks to a goal by Jaedin Rhodes.
However, Sundowns players had an excellent campaign even though they would have wanted it to end with another history.
With that in mind, let's delve into their top scorers across all competitions this campaign.
Mamelodi Sundowns top goal scorers across all competitions
It's important to note that this list does not include goals from CAF Champions League qualifying games, or friendly matches.
Lucas Ribeiro – 14 goals
Lucas Ribeiro finished as Mamelodi Sundowns' joint top scorer this season. However, he is the club's top scorer in the Premier Soccer League.
The Brazilian enjoyed his first season with Masandawana; as 12 of his 14 goals came in South Africa's top division. He also scored once in the CAF Champions League and the other in the Nedbank Cup.
Although these don't count towards his total, it's fair to point out that Ribeiro scored twice in the CAF Champions League qualifying rounds, and once on his debut in a friendly game.
Peter Shalulile – 14 goals
Peter Shalulile had a great season with the Sundowns. He found the back of the net nine times in the PSL, twice in the MTN8 Cup, twice in the CAF Champions League and once in the African Football League (AFL).
The Namibian player has scored in four different competitions so far, he also registered two goals in a friendly game, and one in the qualifying rounds of the CAF Champions League this season.
Thembinkosi Lorch – 6 goals
Thembinkosi Lorch scored his first PSL goal on 29 April against TS Galaxy and added a second when Sundowns thrashed Chiefs 5-1.
Lorch scored his first goal for Masandawana this season in the CAF Champions League against FC Nouadhibou. He has scored three more in the Nedbank Cup for Rhulani's side to take his tally to six goals.
Gaston Sirino – 5 goals
Gaston Sirino scored the equaliser in Masandawana's 2-2 draw with TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup. However, that didn't help much, as Sundowns crashed out of the tournament on penalties.
The Uruguayan also scored once in the CAF Champions League, and netted a hat-trick in the Nedbank Cup round 32 for Rhulani Mokwena's side.
Tashreeq Matthews – 4 goals
Youngster Tashreeq Matthews bagged 4 PSL goals this season. His first came from the bench when he scored one in Sundowns' 2-0 win over Chippa United in March. After netting his second against Sekhukhune United in a 2-1 victory in April, Matthews added two more in the 5-1 demolition of Kaizer Chiefs.
Grant Kekana – 4 goals
Like Ribeiro and Shalulile, Grant Kekana's goals came in both the PSL and CAF Champions League.
The Bafana Bafana player scored three times in the PSL this season, an impressive feat for a defender. He also netted one in the CAF Champions League.
Marcelo Allende – 4 goals
Marcelo Allende has scored three goals for Bafana Ba Style this season. The Chilean netted one goal each in the Carling Knockout Cup and the AFL, and two in the Premier Soccer League.
Teboho Mokoena – 4 goals
Sundowns most trusted midfielder Teboho Mokoena scored for the team in the CAF Champions League during the group stage against Pyramids. He followed that with three more goals in the PSL to take his tally this season to four goals.
Aubrey Maphosa Modiba – 3 goals
Aubrey Maphosa Modiba will be remembered for scoring the goal that clinched the AFL title for Masandawana. He scored three times for the club this season, once in the African Football League, and twice in the PSL.
Lesiba Nku – 4 goals
Lesiba Nku put up a man-of-the-match performance in Mamelodi Sundowns' 4-0 victory over the Lamontville Golden Arrows back in August before bagging his second and third PSL goals against Royal AM and Stellenbosch. His fourth goal came in the CAF Champions League.
Thapelo Maseko – 2 goals
It can be said that Thapelo Maseko's goals helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the inaugural African Football League event. The Bafana Bafana player scored twice this season, and both were in the AFL.
One of those goals ensured the Sundowns would advance to the semi-finals. Interestingly, Maseko's other goal was the only goal scored in Masandawana's two-legged semi-final tie with Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly.
Matias Esquivel – 2 goals
Esquivel was a delight to watch whenever called upon this season. More of a utility player, the South American scored twice this season for Mokwena's men with his second coming against Kaizer Chiefs, the day Sundowns were crowned champions.
Khuliso Mudau – 2 goals
Mudau bagged two goals for Sundowns this season. His last effort was against Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup semifinal.
Mamelodi Sundowns players with one goal this season
There are also a few honourable mentions, players who have scored just once this season. These are Siyabonga Mabena, Sipho Mbule, Neo Maema, Junior Mendieta, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Lebohang Maboe, Terrence Mashego, Themba Zwane, Thapelo Morena and Junior Mendieta.
Although these players have one goal to their name, it's worth mentioning that some of those goals were all Sundowns needed to win in some cases.
