Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to the Premier League following an impressive season with QPR.
And the Championship outfit manager Mark Warburton has said the club needs to bring in players before they can think about selling the England born Nigerian.
According to talkSPORT earlier this month, Rangers had turned down a deal worth an initial £8m plus £4m in add-ons from Crystal Palace for the 22-year-old.
West Ham are also interested in signing the talented playmaker, but no deal has yet materialised.
Warburton joined talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday and gave an update on the current situation of their star player.
He said: “If we sell a player first, people assume you are cashing in. You sell a player for £15m-£18m ‘oh they must be cashing in’.
“We know the financial landscape is such that owners are writing cheques every month, so the money gets absorbed into the costs.
“You’ve got to try and do your business as early as you can or you run the risk of levels not being reached and players staying with you. It’s a game of poker and a dangerous one.
“You hope very much you can come out on the winning side. It’s not an easy challenge, that’s for sure.”
Warburton will need any extra reinforcements he can get ahead of the 2020/21 season following the fixture release on Friday morning.
Games will be packed in throughout the campaign and the QPR boss admitted it will be a challenge for those with small squads.
He added: “The league is so relentless. I look more at the batches of games. October 17 we have seven in 21 days and a little bit further on we have nine in 28 days.

“These are the types of runs of games that really challenge smaller squads.”
