Ninety-seven minutes had been played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on 9 June 2024 when referee John Ojeleye pointed to the spot for Rangers. The score was 0-0, the title was on the line, and within moments Enyimba's players had walked off while fans spilled onto the pitch. The Oriental derby has rarely been gentle, but that night in Enugu it simply stopped.

Two cities, one crown
Rangers came first. Founded in 1970, the Flying Antelopes were giants of the 1970s and 1980s. In 1977 they lifted the African Cup Winners' Cup, and Enugu still treats it like a family heirloom.
Enyimba arrived in November 1976 as a state-owned club in Aba.
Their great era came later and came fast: back-to-back league titles at the start of the 2000s, then the CAF Champions League in 2003 and again in 2004, which no other Nigerian club has managed before or since, and which turned a club from a commercial town in Abia State into the standard every rival in the country, Rangers included, had to measure itself against.
That is the heart of it. One club owns the old glory, the other built the modern machine. The 2023 title, when Enyimba won a record ninth Nigeria league title, seemed to settle the argument.
It did not stay settled. Rangers beat Ikorodu City 2-1 in Lagos on 24 May 2026 to win the 2025/26 NPFL. Channels Television called it a ninth league crown, level with Enyimba as the competition's most successful clubs.
The night the Cathedral boiled over
Go back to June 2024. Rangers led the table on 60 points with Enyimba two behind, and the week 35 clash in Enugu was billed everywhere as a title decider. The build-up, which we tracked in our piece on the NPFL 2023/24 final stretch, was all nerves.
Enyimba's coach at the time, Yemi Daniel Olanrewaju, was quoted by Daily Trust before kick-off: “Rangers look like the favourites but we will fight till the end.”
They fought, then they left. After the late penalty, Enyimba's players protested, walked off and refused to let the kick be taken, and the NPFL's ruling a day later was brutal: Enyimba forfeited the three points and three goals to Rangers, were fined N10 million in total, and three of their players were named for further investigation. Rangers were not spared either. The league fined the hosts N5 million for offences including over-ticketing and poor crowd control.
Some derbies are remembered for goals. This one is remembered for a spot kick nobody took.
Recent meetings: what the record shows
A reliable all-time head-to-head count is hard to pin down. The figures in circulation do not agree, so here is what is documented.
- 10 April 2022, Aba: Enyimba 2-1 Rangers, Victor Mbaoma heading the winner
- 9 June 2024, Enugu: abandoned at 0-0 in added time, points and goals awarded to Rangers
- 3 December 2024, Aba: Enyimba 0-0 Rangers
- 30 November 2025, Aba: Enyimba 2-1 Rangers, Chidera Michael and Stanley Dimgba scoring before Kenechukwu Agu's stoppage-time reply
- 19 April 2026, Enugu: Rangers 2-1 Enyimba, behind closed doors
The Aba pattern stands out. BusinessDay said that 2022 win extended Enyimba's “seven-year Oriental dominance” at home. Rangers have not won in Aba in any meeting listed above.
The April 2026 game told a different story. Played without fans because of an earlier crowd sanction, it looked like turning Enyimba's way when Wonah Williams scored from outside the box three minutes after the break, before defenders Chiedozie Iwundu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi struck in the space of seven minutes to put Rangers back on top of the table. Emmanuel Deutsch, then in the Enyimba dugout, did not hide from it. “Rangers played well, likewise my team but the better side won,” he told reporters.
Where the derby stands in 2026/27
The two clubs enter this season from very different places. Rangers finished 2025/26 on 68 points, one ahead of Rivers United, and Fidelis Ilechukwu's side are back in the CAF Champions League. Enyimba finished 11th on 49 points from 38 matches and only escaped relegation on the final day, which is not a sentence anyone in Aba expected to read.
The new campaign has not changed the mood.
Enyimba lost 2-1 at Niger Tornadoes on the opening weekend, then went down 3-2 to Sporting Lagos in Aba on matchday 5. Rangers, playing their home games in Abeokuta while the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is renovated, drew 1-1 with Katsina United before Iwundu's 80th-minute goal beat Ranchers 1-0.
Our view
Level on nine titles each, the rivalry finally has a scoreboard that matters beyond a single afternoon, and the next title will be read in Enugu and Aba as a claim to being the biggest club in Nigerian football.
Rangers have the momentum.
Enyimba have the impatience: supporters told the News Agency of Nigeria in August they expect continental football again. They also have Aba, where the Flying Antelopes keep coming unstuck, and few grounds among the best football stadiums in Nigeria feel as hostile on derby day. Whenever rangers vs enyimba comes round this season, look at the venue first.
