In an earlier report, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), announced a substantial 40% increase in prize money for the upcoming AFCON.

Ahead of the competition which is set to kick off on January 13th, CAF took to its website to release a statement about the prize money.

According to the report, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will take home US$7 million if they emerge winners of the competition, that's over N6 billion on current exchange rates.

Buoyed by this, the Nigerian team along with the rest of the 23 teams in the competition, are motivated in their quest to make a significant impact in the tournament with the stakes raised so high.

Other AFCON money rewards

For the runner-up, the prize money also witnessed an increase, with US$4 million set aside for them. Meanwhile, teams that made the semifinals will get US$2.5 million.

And not only that, teams that qualified for the quarter-finals have their rewards as well, with US$1.3 million earmarked for each of them.

This is a notable increase in the AFCON prize money which reflects a commitment from CAF to recognise and reward excellence on the football pitch, and will also help the respective Federations grow and develop football in their regions.

While the tournament kicks off on January 13th with hosts battling Guinea Bissau at the beautiful Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan, Nigeria will face Equatorial Guinea in its opening match 24 hours later at the same venue.
