When will the Super Eagles catch a break? After the team witnessed several injuries that have seen a few players miss the tournament, the Nigerian national team is still waiting for its first good news at AFCON 2023.
Early Tuesday morning, news broke of another setback for the Super Eagles in their camp as they prepare for an all-important clash against the hosts Ivory Coast on Thursday.
The latest to bring apprehension into the Super Eagles AFCON 2023 camp is defender Bright Osayi-Samuel.
The Fenerbahçe SK defender who replaced Ola Aina in the late stages of their game against the Nzalang Nacional was reported to have gone down to food poisoning.
Super Eagles defender in food poisoning case – may miss Ivory Coast game
Earlier on Tuesday, the Super Eagles received yet another worrisome news following reports of food poisoning suffered by Osayi-Samuel.
The defender plies his trade in Turkey and is playing in his first tournament for the Nigerian national team, but things have not gotten to a bright start for him.
He was a late-minute substitute for the Super Eagles in the 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea. He was possibly in line for a first start of the tournament ahead of Ola Aina against the Elephants of Ivory Coast.
Osayi-Samuel reported that he suffered food poisoning reports, raising genuine fears he may miss the Ivory Coast game, but the defender has allayed any such worries.
“I got food poisoning, today I’m a bit weak, but I should be ok,” he assured.

When the news broke, Nigerians were already suspecting foul play, but it seemed to be a minor issue.
With midfielder Alhassan Yusuf struggling to be fit for the game against the Ivorians after he was stretchered off in the game against Equatorial Guinea, Jose Peseiro will be looking for the silver lining in the dark clouds hovering over his team.
We play better against big teams
Osayi-Samuel, after allaying the fears of Nigerian fans, has given hope of getting the team on track to win AFCON 2023.
The right-back said they were battle-ready for the game against the Ivorians.
He claimed that the Super Eagles usually played better against top teams and asked Nigerians to support the team.
“I believe that with the squad that we have the game against Ivory Coast we will do our best, when we play against those big teams that’s when we do better we know what it takes and everyone is confident.“
He expressed his disappointment at the result of their first game.
“Honestly of course we wanted to win, it’s a bit disappointing because a big nation like us every game we are expected to win,” the Fenerbahce defender said.
