The Portuguese took over from Mauricio Pochettino in November with Spurs 11 points adrift of fourth place and they offered Mourinho the bonus because of the importance of maintaining their Champions League status and the scale of the task.

Tottenham chairman Levy is very well known for his penchant to reward his players and managers for performing well, and given the Spurs’ position when Mourinho took the job te manager would deserve his bonus if he can keep the Lilywhites among European football's elite.

The recent spate of injuries affecting Spurs, star striker Harry Kane especially, makes the task of climbing the table significantly harder.

But Mourinho has already signed Gedson Fernandes from Benfica in the hope of strengthening his squad this month.
