Akor Adams has begun life in Ligue 1 with a bang after scoring two goals in two minutes for his new side Montpellier FC in their opening match of the 2023/24 French top-flight season.

The 23-year-old was signed by the French side from Norwegian Eliteserien club Lillestrøm for £5.5 million in the summer transfer window. He has settled well into life in Southern France and has begun to yield results for his new employers.

In-form Akor Adams scored two goals to help Montpellier come back against Le Have but their opening game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Akor Adams makes Ligue 1 history with brace in debut for Montpellier

Ligue 1 has seen big stars like Lionel Messi, Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Ronaldinho come and go. It currently has Kylian Mbappe as the face of the league.

However, it is Super Eagles prospect Akor Adams who set two amazing records with his debut brace for his new club Montpellier.

The former Nigeria national football team youth player became the first player to score a brace in their official debut and also became the player to score the fastest brace in Ligue 1 history.

His two goals came in the space of two minutes as Montpellier battled to equalise and comeback after Le Have had gone ahead in the fight minute of the game. Akor Adams scored in the 58th and 60th minutes of the game to give his new team a rousing comeback but defensive frailty saw them concede in the 90th minute for a 2-2 opening day draw.

After Adams drew his team level with a powerful header in the 58th minute, he got his second two minutes later after getting a through ball from Kiki Kouyate. The former Flying Eagles forward fired into the bottom right corner to give Montpellier the lead.

Adams will aim to win more fan love and adulation as he follows in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen and Terem Moffi when La Pallaide travel to Lyon to face Olympique Lyonnais in their next Ligue 1 match on 19 August.

Akor Adams coach praises striker, chastises defence for spoiling his debut

Montpellier coach, Michel Der Zakarian, praise the efforts of Akor Adams after the Super Eagles prospect and AFCON 2023 hopeful helped his team fight back to inches of a win on their opening day fixture in the French Ligue 1.

He also expressed his unhappiness with the way his team’s defence fell in the last minutes of the game, leading to a 90th-minute Le Havre equaliser.

“When we lead 2-1 when in the first half we suffered. We took this entry goal, we could have scored just before them,” he was quoted by Allez Paillade as saying. “Unfortunately we don’t score and on a set piece we [are not] attentive.

“We defend badly, we do not attack the balls, when receiving the cross we are not on the fallout of the ball…

“Afterwards we tried to create situations, even in the first half. We scored two goals which were borderline offside, and we had situations that we could also have achieved.

“In the second half, we had the merit of coming back with a little more freshness and accuracy in our game, we equalised on a nice technical gesture from Téji who put a good cross at the far post and Akor finished well, and the second the same he gives a nice deep ball, he wins his duel he eliminates and put a nice shot.”
