The Owerri born defender began his club football career in the Feirense Youth team from 2018 to 2020.

During the time he was in the Portuguese club, he gained promotion from the youth team to the senior team in 2020 after showcasing enough potential.

However, after making his debut for Feirense, he was often not a regular and was first sent on loan to Vila Real in the 2020/21 season, a club that plays in the Portuguese fourth tier.

Onyemaechi returned back to his parent club where he played during the 2021/22 season, gaining some playing time more than he did in his first debut season.

Having not fully convinced his coach at the time, he was again loaned out, this time to Boavista during the 2022/23 season. This was a great step for the Nigerian who impressed Os Axadrezados enough to convince the club management to trigger the option to sign the player.

Onyemaechi signed a two-year deal for Boavista in June 2023, where he currently plays for at the time of writing, to mark a significant growth in his football career.

On 29 December 2023, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro officially included Onyemaechi in the Nigeria's 25-man AFCON 2023 squad.

The Boavista defender will be marking his debut in the competition where Nigeria seeks to clinch its fourth AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast.

The event will kick-start on 13 January 2024, and Onyemaechi is expected to compete in defense as Nigeria opens their group A account against Equatorial Guinea on 14 January.
