Oluebube Umejiaku scored in the 40th minute and Mary Dunstan doubled the lead in the 71st as Nigeria's Flamingos beat Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup on Thursday. Mexico pulled one back in stoppage time. It was too late. Nigeria held on in Salé, near Rabat, and now meet Venezuela in the quarter-finals.

How the match was decided

Umejiaku's goal gave Nigeria a 1-0 lead at half-time. The Flamingos kept up the pressure after the restart. It was her second goal in successive games, after the one she scored against North Korea on 23 October, and it gave a side that had lost its opening match something to build on.

Dunstan's finish made it 2-0.

Naija News reported that Nigeria had 54 per cent of the possession and 16 shots, five of them on target, against 11 shots from Mexico, who also had five on target. Both teams won four corners. Premium Times credited Emily Delgado with Mexico's consolation, scored in stoppage time with the Flamingos already two goals clear. The late goal changed the scoreline, not the outcome.

What it means for Nigeria

The Flamingos finished second in Group B on six points. That was enough. They lost 2-1 to Poland, beat Puerto Rico 2-0, and then beat North Korea 3-1. That last result ended an 18-match run without a defeat in regulation time for the Koreans, according to Premium Times.

The goals have come from several players. Against Puerto Rico on 20 October, Adegbuyi scored in the 25th minute and Precious Oscar added a second in stoppage time, according to FIFA. Against North Korea, Adegbuyi, Umejiaku and Kanyinsola Yusuf each found the net. A healthy sign.

A place among the last eight is the first knockout win of this campaign. Our preview of the Mexico tie set out what was at stake. The answer on the pitch was narrow. It was also earned.

Next year brings the senior Falcons' Olympic qualifier against Morocco.

Venezuela next

Venezuela reached the quarter-finals by beating Germany, the reigning European champions. They will be no pushovers.

The Flamingos will meet them on Sunday 1 November at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé. Premium Times gave the kick-off as 7 p.m. Nigerian time. A win would take Nigeria into the semi-finals.
