On 22 September 2026, Kenya's players reported to camp for an AFCON 2027 qualifier against Eritrea and refused to train. Allowances from more than five matches were unpaid, K24 reported. So any answer on Harambee Stars players salary starts with one awkward fact: the national team pays no salary at all.
| At a glance | Detail |
|---|---|
| Best-paid Kenyan (published estimate) | Michael Olunga, about $1.95m a year at Al-Duhail (Capology via Pulse Sports, January 2025) |
| Olunga's current club | Al Arabi, Qatar, two-year deal signed July 2025; pay not public |
| National team salary | None; players get camp allowances and match bonuses |
| CHAN 2024 group-stage pledge | Ksh1m per player per game, Ksh2.5m for beating Zambia |
| Typical FKF Premier League pay | Ksh20,000 to Ksh150,000 a month (The Kenya Times) |
| Head coach | Benni McCarthy; salary not disclosed |
| Exchange rate used | Ksh129.81 per US dollar (CBK, 15 October 2026) |
Why the money talk keeps hitting the camp
The boycott ended. Kenya drew 1-1 with Eritrea at Nyayo, then lost 1-0 in Conakry on 1 October when Serhou Guirassy scored for Guinea, leaving McCarthy's side on one point from two Group D games. The coach named the cause. “You are promised you are going to get your allowance and it goes three, four and five different camps,” he told reporters on 23 September.
The Ministry of Sports replied a day later. It said allowances for games in Zambia, South Africa and Turkey were paid, along with the bench's outstanding salaries. Later trips were still being processed with the federation.
No amount was published.
That matters. Club pay is the real salary. A diaspora professional treats the allowance as pocket money. For a Gor Mahia or Tusker player it can be a serious slice of the year's income, which is why the protest held across the squad.
Harambee Stars players salary: the squad by club
Clubs come from the squad McCarthy named on 16 September 2026, checked against this year's transfer reports. Only one player has a widely reported salary estimate.
| Player | Club | League / country | Known salary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michael Olunga | Al Arabi | Qatar Stars League | Not public (about $1.95m a year at previous club Al-Duhail, Capology estimate) |
| Manzur Okwaro | Stade de Reims | France | Not public |
| Joseph Okumu | Stade de Reims | France | Not public |
| Timothy Ouma | Charlton Athletic (loan from Slavia Prague) | England, Championship | Not public |
| Ryan Ogam | RFC Liège (loan from Wolfsberger AC) | Belgium, second tier | Not public |
| Stanley Wilson | AIK | Sweden | Not public |
| Rooney Onyango | Sogndal | Norway | Not public |
| Duke Abuya | Yanga SC | Tanzania | Not public |
| Brian Bwire | Tusker FC | FKF Premier League | Not public |
| Byrne Omondi | Gor Mahia | FKF Premier League | Not public |
Olunga is the top earner on every measure. Pulse Sports, drawing on Capology, put his Al-Duhail pay at about $1.95 million a year, roughly Ksh253 million at the CBK rate of 15 October. He joined Al Arabi on a two-year deal in July 2025. Nothing has surfaced on that contract, so treat the Al-Duhail number as a reference point rather than his current wage, as we explain in our breakdown of Michael Olunga's salary and net worth.
Below him?
Context only. Ouma's Championship loan, the Reims pair and Ogam in Belgium all sit in leagues paying far above East African levels. None of those deals is public, and we will not guess.
Bonuses: where the State House cash comes in
August 2025 gave Kenyan fans actual numbers. During the CHAN 2024 finals, which Kenya co-hosted, President William Ruto pledged Ksh1 million per player for each group game, then Ksh2.5 million each for beating Zambia and another million plus an affordable housing unit for a quarter-final win, according to Kenyans.co.ke. “The Harambee Stars are proof of what unity can achieve,” Ruto said on 11 August.
Kenya beat Zambia. Payday. The Standard reported each player was Sh3 million richer once a Sh500,000 pledge from Raila Odinga was added. Then Madagascar won the quarter-final 4-3 on penalties at Kasarani on 22 August, and the housing bonus never came into play.
FKF president Hussein Mohammed later put the total at Sh232 million in allowances and bonuses. CAF added Sh58.2 million for the quarter-final.
The coach's pay is murkier. In March 2025, after reports claimed McCarthy earned Ksh8 million a month, FKF communications chief Jeff Kinyanjui called the figure inaccurate and said the government pays the coach within Salaries and Remuneration Commission guidelines. The real number? Still secret.
The home-based reality
Ordinary FKF Premier League wages run from Ksh20,000 to Ksh150,000 a month, about $154 to $1,156 at today's rate, according to a 2024 report in The Kenya Times. The best reach Ksh400,000. Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula said his whole monthly wage bill tops Ksh3.5 million.
Do the sum. It is brutal. On the Capology estimate, Olunga's weekly pay at Al-Duhail was bigger than that entire Homeboyz squad's monthly payroll.
There is no published league minimum wage, and the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association wants a collective bargaining agreement covering one, plus unpaid salaries, and said in November 2025 it had sent the federation several drafts without reply.
Our view
Exiles earning more than home-based players is normal across Africa, a split we also track in our Black Queens players' salary guide. What is not normal is a strike four days before a home qualifier over money the state controls. Kenya are already through to AFCON 2027 as co-hosts, with the November window next, and paying on time is the cheapest preparation going. Olunga, still adding to his place on the Harambee Stars all-time scorers list, can live with a late cheque. The Gor Mahia goalkeeper beside him cannot.
