Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was taken off after 80 minutes and replaced by James Milner during the Reds’ 1-0 Champions League loss to Atletico Madrid after feeling his hamstring.
The home side took the lead through Saul Niguez after only five minutes and that was the end of the scoring as Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to create chances.
Despite having close to 80% possession on the night, the European champions were unable to break down their stubborn opponents.
And they now have it all to do in the second leg at Anfield in three weeks time.
“It was a hamstring which I hope was a precaution,” Klopp told BT Sport after the match.
“He wasn’t too concerned but he had to come off.”
The Reds will now be waiting for developments on the injury and will hope for a speedy return.
Klopp and the team had to contend with the usual tactics from Diego Simeone’s team in Madrid and the needle between the two teams was apparent after the match.
