Mamelodi Sundowns are the biggest team in the South African top-flight with 13 league titles to their name. The Brazilians, as they are fondly called, have won the league in each of the past six seasons and are currently looking good for a seventh crown.
Although they have dominated on the home front, Mamelodi Sundowns have not been able to replicate that on the continent frequently. They won their first CAF Champions League title in 2016 after being losing finalists far back in 2001.
Mamelodi Sundowns over the past years have seen prolific players dorn their colours. Players like Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile are still featuring for them, while the legendary Hlomphho Kekana and Katlego Mphela have made their marks in the past.
As we go into the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League where Mamelodi Sundowns will be making their first appearance of the season, there is no better time to look at the club’s top goal scorers in the competition than now.
Mamelodi Sundowns top goal scorers in CAF Champions League
Wayne Arendse (4)
Wayne spent eight seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns. The 38-year-old centre-back enjoyed incredible success with the giants as he won five PSL titles, two South African Cup titles, and one CAF Champions League.
In total, he grabbed four goals in 31 CAF Champions League appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Kermit Erasmus (4)
The journeyman has been in and out of South African football all through his career. But given his limited number of chances, he was able to get four goals in just 10 CAF Champions League appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Khama Billiat (5)
Billiat has been there, done that in South African football as a foreigner. He spent five seasons (2013-2018) with Mamelodi Sundowns and he got five goals from 17 CAF Champions League games for them.
Cassius Mailula (6)
Mailula has the best goal-per-game ratio (0.60) in the CAF Champions League for Mamelodi Sundowns. The 22-year-old, who recently left the league champions for Toronto FC, scored 6 goals in 10 appearances.
Anthony Laffor (7)
Laffor also had a lengthy spell with Mamelodi Sundowns. During his time with them, the Liberian scored 7 goals in 25 CAF Champions League appearances.
Sibusiso Vilakazi (8)
Vilakazi spent just six seasons with Mamelodi Sundowns and did make his mark for them. The attacking midfielder scored 8 goals from 28 CAF Champions League appearances.
Gaston Sirino (9)
Sirino is the only international player on the list. The Uruguayan is still active with Mamelodi Sundowns and has scored 9 goals in 42 appearances for the side.
Thapelo Morena (10)
The right-back likes to bump forward and he has already amassed ten CAF Champions League goals from his 61 appearances to sit in third place on this list.
Peter Shalulile (12)
Peter Shalulile continues to have his name written high in the history books of Mamelodi Sundowns. He has made only 25 CAF Champions League appearances since 2020 and has scored 12 goals.
Themba Zwane (15)
Zwane is Mamelodi Sundowns’ all-time goalscorer and it is not surprising to see him as the number one on this CAF Champions League goalscorers’ list. The attacker has scored 15 goals from 66 appearances.
