The Nigeria National League opens its 2026/27 season at 4pm today, Sunday 1 November. Heartland host Crown FC of Ogbomoso at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, a day later than the Saturday 31 October date first set.

NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana announced the change on 25 October. He cited “important state events scheduled for the same day and venue”, apologised to both clubs and their supporters, and said the adjustment “is in the best interest of a successful start to the new season”.

One match, then a week of waiting

Only this fixture has moved.

Every other game in Conferences A, B, C and D stays on the weekend of 7 and 8 November, so the whole league effectively starts a week from now, with Heartland and Crown FC going first.

Heartland finished third in Conference A last season with 27 points. They won eight, drew three and lost five. Crown FC were seventh on 16 points.

Neither was near the promotion places.

The winner of each conference went up automatically. Those four clubs were Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos, Doma United and Ranchers Bees, all now in the NPFL. Sporting Lagos then took the overall title in the Super 4 round at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne from 4 to 8 May, the first league trophy in their history.

Football in Nigeria added a detail from the archive. The Dan Anyiam Stadium, which holds around 10,000, staged the first leg of the 2009 CAF Champions League final between Heartland and TP Mazembe on 1 November 2009.

The NPFL table is bunched

The top flight is also in action today. Its table is tight. Going into matchday 11, Rivers United, Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United were all on 17 points.

Rivers United lead on goal difference of plus 10 after 10 games. Rangers are on plus 5. They have played eight. Nasarawa United are on plus 3 after 10.

Rivers United host Rangers in Port Harcourt at 4pm, having lost 2-1 at Bendel Insurance last time out, a result that ended their unbeaten start. Rangers, who still have two games in hand, turn back to the league after their exit from the CAF Champions League against MC Alger. Nasarawa United, who beat Enyimba 1-0 in the previous round, play Kano Pillars at the same hour, and a win there would lift them to 20 points and put them level with whichever of Rivers United or Rangers wins in Port Harcourt, or clear of both if that game is drawn.

Friday and Saturday were quieter.

Niger Tornadoes and Barau FC drew 0-0 in Minna on Friday, and Doma United and Ikorodu City shared a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

What it means for Nigerian football

For the NNL, a one-day delay costs little. The only oddity is a league of 36 clubs with one match played and the other 34 waiting a week.

For the NPFL, three clubs level after 10 rounds means every dropped point now matters, and Rangers still have games in hand to play.

Results follow.
