On Saturday, 10 October 2026, Thalente Mbatha started the MTN8 final in Durban, his home city, two months after a knee injury had interrupted his season. Orlando Pirates lost 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns. The analyst Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi still told iDiski TV: “Thalente played very well.”

Here is what is on record about the Bafana Bafana midfielder, from KwaMashu to Los Angeles.

From Real Rabbits to the Buccaneers

He joined Real Rabbits, a KwaMashu side, at ten. Durban FC came next. A July 2025 SuperSport profile recounted how a primary school teacher told him he would “amount to nothing”, and how the school banned him from playing until a coach persuaded his mother to let him return. Highlands Park gave him his debut in 2020. SuperSport United signed him later that year, and he spent more than three seasons in Tshwane before Pirates took him on a six-month loan in January 2024, a move that paid off within months when he was named man of the match as the Buccaneers beat Sundowns 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup final.

The deal became permanent. “He will stay at Pirates,” his agent, Mike Makaab, confirmed in June 2024.

Thalente Mbatha stats: 2025/26 and this season

Pirates waited 14 years for 2025/26. They clinched the league on 23 May 2026 with a 2-0 win at Orbit College in Mbombela, one point clear of Sundowns. Their previous title had come in 2012. Mbatha played 70 minutes that day, FotMob shows.

FotMob credits him with 28 domestic appearances that season, 22 of them in the league, plus one goal and one assist. The goal came in the Nedbank Cup.

Nobody signed him for goals, though.

This season has been stop-start. Painfully so. Briefly News reported that he was out from 10 August with a knee problem and back in full training on 28 September. The final was only his third appearance of 2026/27, and he sat out the 3-0 win over TS Galaxy three days later. “He's an important player for us,” coach Abdeslam Ouaddou said. “So we play two days after and we don't want to take any risks about him.”

Bafana Bafana, AFCON and the World Cup

He scored on his debut. That was against Uganda in Soweto on 6 September 2024, a 2-2 AFCON qualifier. Four days later he struck again in a 3-2 win over South Sudan in Juba, and his third goal came in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Rwanda in Mbombela on 14 October 2025.

At AFCON 2025 in Morocco he was a squad option. He started the 1-0 loss to Egypt and came off the bench against Zimbabwe. Cameroon then won 2-1 in Rabat.

The World Cup was different.

Hugo Broos named him on 28 May 2026, and FotMob records him in all three group games, against Mexico, Czechia and South Korea. In the round of 32 at SoFi Stadium on 28 June he came on at half-time for Relebohile Mofokeng, before Stephen Eustaquio won it for Canada in stoppage time.

What does Thalente Mbatha earn?

Nobody outside the club knows.

Pirates have not disclosed his wages. The salary lists that circulate in the South African press, including Briefly News rankings updated in 2026, leave him out, and Transfermarkt shows no contract expiry date. Any monthly figure you see online is a guess.

His transfer value is on record. Soccer Laduma reported in 2025 that Pirates had pencilled in a price of around R20 million amid talk of interest from an English Championship club. Makaab dismissed the story: “To be honest, this is not true.” Transfermarkt put him at 2 million euros in June 2026. Our list of the highest-paid Bafana Bafana players shows how wages vary across the squad.

The Nigeria angle

Super Eagles fans have seen him up close. He was on the bench when South Africa and Nigeria drew 1-1 in Bloemfontein on 9 September 2025. Nigeria then lost the play-off final to DR Congo on penalties in Rabat that November, which meant the World Cup stage Mbatha went on to play on in North America was one the Eagles, for all their talent, never reached. The rivalry is covered in our Bafana Bafana vs Nigeria AFCON record and our guide to Bafana's World Cup qualifiers.

Off the pitch he keeps it to faith and family. He grew up in a house full of boys. His mother sends him Bible verses before every game.

Township side, Durban FC, a long wait at SuperSport, then a loan that ended with a league title: for a home-based NPFL midfielder dreaming of a move south, that path is worth studying.
