The Turkish national team was the youngest team at Euro-2020 in terms of average age.

Senol Gunes’ squad had some big names, so they were expected to fight for the last 16 for a reason.

Why is the result surprising?

An attacking midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu played for Milan this season and created the most chances in the top 5 leagues of Europe (98).

Burak Yilmaz dragged Lille with his goals to an unexpected championship in France, which was predicted by some pundits at https://bookmaker-ratings.com/.

Caglar Söyüncü was one of the pivotal players of Leicester, who fought for the Champions League in England.

In qualification, the Turks scored four points in two matches with France national team. In March 2021 they beat the Netherlands at home, so a lot hinted that they have a chance to make a noise as they did in 2008.

It did not work out though: Turkey will almost certainly become the worst team in Euro 2020.

Three matches, zero points, eight missed and only one scored.

They allowed 62 shots on their own goal, and this is in the group with Wales and Switzerland, the teams which are not widely considered to tear apart their opponents.

National team players looking forward to the next tournament

Çalhanoğlu admitted that this competition was an enormous frustration for a whole team.

He also believes that he and his partners should learn from the mistakes they made on this Euro and not just be upset for no reason.

The team is very young and surely will gain experience with time.

His partner, Burak Yilmaz, supported this opinion: “I have to admit that we were not able to cope with the game in such a serious tournament.

“We qualified for the Euro, we are performing very well in qualification for the World Cup, but I see that we need to learn how to play in these tournaments”.

North Macedonia still finished worse at Euro 2020.

The Macedonians have two goals with seven conceded.

But zero points from the Macedonians hardly surprise anyone. Such a failure from Turkey is definitely a shock.

The Turks are the first in the history of the current Euro format, who finished the tournament with zero points for the second time.

Below we recall the previous time when Turkey left the European Championships with three defeats.

Turkey-1996: 0 points, goal difference 0:5

25 years ago, when the Turks first got into the group stage of the European Championship, they finished in last place with zero points.

Then Turkey with Hakan Şükür, Korkmaz, Ryushtu and other notable personalities confidently broke through the selection and got into not the most challenging group with Croatia, Portugal and Denmark.

Surely the Turkish national team was devastated by two defeats in the starting rounds: they lost 0:1 to the Croatians and the Portuguese while conceding from Croatia in the last five minutes.

Then Denmark, under the refereeing of Nikolai Levnikov, scored three to Turkey.

After that, the Turks left the tournament as the first team, who did not score a single point at Euro.
