Asamoah Gyan (born in 22 November 1985 in Accra, Ghana) is a professional footballer who played as a striker for Ghana and host of other clubs in a career that spanned for almost 2 decades. He was former captain of the Ghana national team who could have been the first African country to reach the semifinal of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Gyan started his career in 2003 with Liberty Professionals, a club in the local league in Ghana, where he scored 10 goals in 16 games. From there, he signed for Udinese in Italy where he spent 3 years; developing as a loanee for two seasons at Modena where he scored 15 goals in 53 league matches. After returning to Udinese, he scored 11 times in 39 league matches.
In 2008, Gyan joined Rennes, and notched 14 goals in 48 matches in 2 seasons. In 2010, Gyan shifted his focus to England joining Sunderland and breaking the club's transfer record. He would go on to score 10 goals in 34 Premier League games for Sunderland where he played for 2 seasons.
In 2011, the Ghana International moved from Europe to Asia, joining Al Ain in the UAE Pro-League on loan from Sunderland and became the league's top-goalscorer, notching 24 goals in 27 matches and winning the title. As a result of this, the club signed him; he went on to become the league's top-goalscorer for the second time helping Al Ain retain the UAE Pro-League title with his impressive 28 goals in 32 matches. The best was yet to come, as in the 2013-2014 season, Gyan scored 44 goals in 40 matches with Al Ain, his best goal-return in professional career.
Gyan went on to play for clubs like Shanghai SIPG, Kayserispor, Northeast United and finally Legon Cities in Ghana. On 20 June 2023, Gyan announced his retirement from active football having not played for the past two years.
