Ghana Premier League players are set to take to the pitch this weekend. It is worthy of note that the three top scorers from last season will be absent.
It is not a surprise, as the past seasons have shown a template of Ghana Premier League players leaving the country immediately after they achieve something of note.
Top scorer from last season, Abednego Tetteh, announced his retirement from football after consistently being overlooked for a slot with the Black Stars.
Tetteh finished top scorer last term with 18 goals. Hafiz Konkoni – runner-up in the goal chase, joined Young Africans of Tanzania at the end of the season.
Not to be left out of the party, Tamale City FC striker Sampson Eduku, who scored 14 goals, signed for Iraqi giants Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya.
With these departures, who are the Ghana Premier League players to watch in the 2023/24 season?
Best Ghana Premier League players
Jonathan Sowah (Forward – Medeama SC)
Medeama SC are the defending champions of the Ghana Premier League.
They have consolidated their status with a victory over Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League to move to the next round.
Of course, as one of the top Ghana Premier League players, Jonathan Sowah was instrumental in their success last season.
He scored 12 league goals and got his first cap for the Black Stars of Ghana.
The former beach soccer star has been a phenomenon in the league.
In the friendly tie against Liberia, he assisted with one of the goals as Ghana beat their West African neighbours 3-1.
Should Sowah continue in this form, he is one to watch. He is one of the best players in the league.
Vincent Atinga (Defender – Medeama SC)
Sorry, we did not start this list with the man adjudged to be the best player last season.
Vincent Atinga, the centre-back for Medeama, was in phenomenal form last season for his club. The performances by Atinga earned him the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League Player of the Season award.
The former Hearts of Oak defender beat Jonathan Sowah, Abednego Tetteh, Hafiz Konkoni, Sampson Eduku, and Michel Otou to the award.
Atinga won several Man of the Match awards in the Ghana Premier League.
He helped Medeama SC to clinch the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League title for the first time in the club’s history.
Atinga scored 11 goals (9 penalties) to become the highest-scoring defender last term.
Mizack Afriyie (Forward – Berekum Chelsea)
Not many know who Mizack Afriyie is, but after his heroics from last term, he is a name worth putting in your book of best Ghana Premier League players.
With the new season about to kick off, there are plenty of expectations for the young man, who has settled in well in the league.
With things not working out for the 19-year-old during his April trials with Belgian side Genk, Mizack should continue flying high.
He was the fourth top scorer in the Ghana Premier League last term with 19 goals and one assist.
Mizack has strength, power and shooting abilities, which have made him a top forward for most defenders to handle.
Aziz Issah (Winger – Dreams F.C)
Dreams FC are participating in the Confederation Cup this season. One man was instrumental to their success – Aziz Issah.
Aziz Issah helped the club, which gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League in 2015, finish sixth last season.
Issah was also in the thick of things as Dreams won the FA Cup last season to pick a ticket to the continental competition.
In the final against King Faisal, they won 2-0, with Issah scoring one. The young man was a livewire throughout the game.
He struck a free kick that missed the goal by inches but made amends in the 20th minute to give Dreams FC the opening goal.
Issah also won the 2022/23 FA Cup Discovery of the Season award.
Clinton Duodu (Winger – Bechem United)
Bechem United came close to winning the Ghana Premier League. However, Medeama SC beat them to the title.
They finished third behind Medeama and Aduana Stars, with six points separating them from the champions.
Clinton Duodu was instrumental to their solid run and is worth watching this season.
Despite his young age, he is one of the top Ghana Premier League players.
At 18, Clinton provides plenty of options up front, where he operates from the left and right wing. He can also play as a second striker.
Clinton played his first Ghana Premier League game in the 2020/21 season and has since been an integral member of the Hunters.
He made six goal contributions with three goals and assists.
