On 7 September 2026, Job Ochieng scored his first La Liga goal. It came in the 11th minute of Real Sociedad's 3-2 win over Elche, and the Nairobi-born winger then set up the other two. The Nation summed up his route in one headline: from modest Ligi Ndogo academy to Spain's La Liga.
That is the story parents have in mind when they look for a football academy in Kenya. The market now stretches well beyond Ngong Road, and fees, selection and outcomes vary a great deal.

Nairobi: Ligi Ndogo and the fee-paying model
Ligi Ndogo is still the reference point. It has been running since 2002. Its website lists Ayub Timbe, Jesse Were and Kevin Wang'aya among former trainees. Its East Africa Cup for under-7 to under-19 sides was set for 21 to 23 August 2026.
The 2026 online registration form offers two payment options, Ksh 24,000 or Ksh 15,000, which is roughly $185 or $115 at the Central Bank of Kenya rate of 26 October, although the page does not say what period each sum covers. Families also supply a birth certificate, school details and medical history.
Ochieng's testimonial on the club site explains the appeal. “At 15 I was playing for the Ligi Ndogo senior team in the FKF Div 1 league,” he wrote. His path then ran through Maspalomas in Spain from 2020 and Real Sociedad's C and B sides. He was promoted to the first team in August 2026.
Smaller outfits charge less.
When the Eastleigh Voice visited Fazam Football Academy in January 2025, it charged Ksh 3,000 to register and Ksh 3,000 a month, about $23. Founder Feisal Mohamed said that “some academies charge as much as KSh 10,000 per month”. That is close to $77.
Mathare United works from the community end. At the launch of a grassroots project in Githurai in November 2025, captain Brian Ochieng said that “as someone who grew up playing in the MYSA zonal system, I know the impact that this will have on the young players”.
Beyond Nairobi: Homa Bay, Nakuru and Kitale
The boldest new project sits in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County. Acakoro opened its residential base in September 2025, with a registered school on site. “We don't want to produce players for the domestic league,” general manager Luke Scott told Citizen Digital.
Nakuru City Football Academy took 37 players aged nine to 17 to Barcelona in December 2025. Parents paid.
Kitale shows that a school can do an academy's job. Wanjala and Kibet both came through St Anthony's Boys, which won the national secondary schools title, and both moved on to Nastic Sports Academy in Spain. Kibet signed a four-year deal with Celta in July 2025. In January 2026 Valencia confirmed that Wanjala, 19, was joining VCF Mestalla.
The state and FKF pathways
Free routes exist. They depend on selection, not a cheque.
The Kenya Academy of Sports was allocated Sh245 million in the 2025-26 budget. Its football link runs through the Talanta Hela inter-county tournament and an April 2024 agreement with Nastic in Tarragona, which then housed 23 young Kenyans.
The federation has added its own layer. Under the FKF and Acakoro agreement signed on 9 December 2025, scouts were to assess players born in 2011 across five regions, with the best given full scholarships and a place in the national under-15 to under-17 pathway aimed at the 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. “Kenya has world-class talent,” FKF president Hussein Mohammed said. “What we have lacked is a structured, long-term development pathway.”
In February 2026, 30 Central Region scouts finished a FIFA Talent Development Scheme workshop in Nairobi. Mombasa and Kisumu were next.
Our view: what the clubs add
FKF Premier League clubs remain the weak link. Tusker promoted youth striker David Polepole, who scored 15 goals for the youth side, and defender George Odhiambo in July 2025. Gor Mahia patron Eliud Owalo then promised to make the youth team the senior side's main feeder.
A Ksh 3,000 academy and a Ksh 24,000 one both buy coaching, matches and exposure. Neither buys a contract. The players who have broken through recently were spotted at a school final, a national camp or an international tournament, so the useful question to put to any academy, in Nairobi or in Homa Bay, is which of those doors it can actually open for a child who is good enough to walk through. Readers comparing markets will find the same tension in our guides to football academies in Ghana and football academies in Abuja. The gap between youth promise and senior pay shows up in what Harambee Stars players earn.
Ochieng's night against Elche will sell plenty of registration forms.
