After being snubbed a number of times in the past, Taiwo Awoniyi eventually got his first call-up to the Super Eagles following an injury to Terem Moffi ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic.
The former Nigeria junior international has been in fine form in the opening weeks of the season for German Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
And Awoniyi has cited his strong work ethic and dedication on the field of play as the reasons for his first call-up to the Nigerian national football team.
“For me it’s every player’s dream,” Awoniyi told Brila FM on Wednesday, in a programme. “Every player will be happy to be part of the Super Eagles and I am one of them.
“It’s a privilege and honour for me to be part of the team which I’m very happy about,” said the 24-year-old who has scored five goals this season in seven Bundesliga games for Union Berlin.
Asked the reason behind the form that has seen him net eight goals in 12 appearances in all competitions this season, the former Liverpool player replied:
“It’s hard work and dedication but for me sometimes you work hard and don’t see the result.
“Just keep on working, be patient and God will do the rest. I’m very happy about it; to be part of the Super Eagles.”
