And it looks as though a deal is in the offing.
That's according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, who claims the Premier League champions have spoken to Atletico and declared their intentions concerning a big-money move this summer.
“Manchester City just told Atletico Madrid they’re ready to pay €70M release clause for Rodri,” he tweeted.
“But the player has not decided yet about his future.”
The 22-year-old has also been linked with a switch to Bayern Munich in recent weeks but looks uncertain on his next career move.
The Atleti star is regarded as the ideal replacement for Fernandinho, who realistically only has a few more years as City's first-choice defensive midfielder.
Rodri can play as a holding midfielder or further forward
Vincent Kompany's exit also means Guardiola is expected to look for a new central defender this summer.
City have been provisionally linked with a move for Rodri's Atletico team-mate Diego Godin, who is leaving the Wanda Metropolitano.
