How the derby was decided

The first goal came after half an hour. Barış Alper Yılmaz found Osimhen. He finished with his left foot.

The second arrived just before the break. Davinson Sánchez had an effort from distance, and Osimhen was in the right place to head the ball in. Fenerbahçe were left chasing the game with the entire second half still to play, in a stadium that sensed the night belonged to the home side.

Fenerbahçe did pull one back.

On 62 minutes İrfan Can Kahveci struck an overhead kick for the visitors. It was a fine goal, and it kept the derby tense until the final whistle, yet Galatasaray held firm from there. Osimhen was taken off on 88 minutes.

SofaScore gave him a rating of 8.1, the highest of any player on the pitch, and counted seven shots from him, three of them on target. Its readers voted him player of the match.

That matters. Osimhen had missed matches with an injury at the start of the month, and a first-half double against the biggest rival in Turkish football, in front of the home crowd at Rams Park, is the kind of night that settles a striker's season and quiets the questions about his fitness.

Job done.

Where Galatasaray stand

Premium Times and Goal both reported that the win put Galatasaray back at the top of the table. Premium Times placed Fenerbahçe fifth. The sources do not agree on the points gap, one of them putting it at six points and the others giving no figure at all, so we leave the exact number out until the league confirms it.

It is a welcome answer after a hard fortnight in Europe. Osimhen played the full 90 minutes of the 4-1 defeat by Barcelona on 13 October and left Istanbul frustrated. He then scored at his old club Lille in the Champions League on 21 October.

Now a brace in a derby. Not bad.

What it means for the Super Eagles

For Nigeria the timing is useful. The AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania come on 11 and 15 November. Eric Chelle will want his main striker arriving in camp in form, with a week of goals behind him rather than a run of frustrating nights, and Monday gave him exactly that. Fitness first, then goals.

No quotes from Osimhen or from either coach were available in the match reports we checked on Tuesday.
