Osimhen wins top award in Serie A after excellent season

Victor Osimhen has been crowned the best under 23 player in Serie A after an impressive season.

Osimhen, who turned 23 in December 2021, has been impressive for Napoli in the league this season despite spending three months on the sidelines due to injury.

His absence cost Napoli the top spot in the Serie A, as his goals greatly contributed to the side going top of the league on two separate occasions. Still, he came back and grabbed the top goalscorer spot in the club, which also kept them in the top three and sealed participation in the UEFA Champions League next season.

He ended the season with 14 goals and 5 assists in 26 appearances. He also won seven penalties and took none of them, which could have taken his goal tally to 21 goals and put him in the running for the Capocannoniere.

He beat out his closest competitor, Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic, 21, who spent the first half of the just concluded season as a Fiorentina player and the rest as a Juventus player.

Osimhen bags award

Osimhen is one of five MVP awardees in the league, the others being Mike Maignan (AC Milan) who won the goalkeeper of the year award, Gleison Bremer (Torino) who won the defender of the year award, Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) who won the midfielder of the year award, and Capocannoniere winner Ciro Immobile (Lazio) who also won the striker of the year award.

This is his third award in the league this season, having been named the Serie A player of the month once and Napoli's player of the month twice.

Fulham table bid for Calvin Bassey

Elsewhere, Fulham has gone ahead of the other suitors to table a bid for Glasgow Rangers defender Calvin Bassey.

The young versatile defender has been solid for the Ibrox side this season and was the fans' man of the match in Rangers' loss to German club Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League.

The 22-year-old has had many suitors as his performances have been standout for Rangers. Aston Villa, on the behest of manager Steven Gerrard, who gave Bassey his big break at Rangers, were reported to be interested in him.

Other Premier League clubs have also been reported to be monitoring him. Fulham have now gone one ahead to table a €4 million bid for the defender to Rangers.

Fulham are preparing for their first season back in the Premier League and are trying to build a team that can help them achieve safety next season.

They believe Bassey's competence will help their goal but it is unknown if the Gers will listen to any offers for him at this time.
