Home is a fortress.
Six played at Port Harcourt, four won, two drawn, none lost, 12 scored and one conceded. That is 14 of 18 points, 2.33 a game. Away is another story. Four points from five games is 0.80 a game: four draws, no win, one defeat. Across all 11 matches it works out at 1.64.
The Barau game was stopped by rain at 0-0 after about 75 minutes on a waterlogged pitch, and the last stretch was played the next day without a goal.
At Nasarawa United the only goal is an own goal credited to Harrison Ebah.
Second, three points off Rangers
We rebuilt the table from all 109 fixtures in our data. That includes Enugu Rangers' 2-1 win over Nasarawa United on 17-18 September, which Sportmonks marks as abandoned but which stands as a result. Rangers beat Bendel Insurance 1-0 on 4 November and now have 21 points from 10 games. Advantage Enugu. They have a match in hand on Rivers United.
Rivers United are second on 18, level with Kano Pillars and Bendel Insurance but ahead of both on goal difference, +10 against +3 and +2. Five goals conceded in 11 games is the best defensive record in the league, and nobody else is below eight, and that stinginess is why a side with four wins in 11 can sit this high. Our matchday 11 report had the four-way tie on 18 to begin with. Yemi Olanrewaju, the assistant coach, put the approach plainly on 21 October, while the club was still unbeaten: “If you don't concede, you can't lose a game.”
Four days later it failed. At Bendel Insurance two goals went in either side of Mbaoma's reply.
Port Harcourt for the league, Uyo for Africa
The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium holds about 38,000. It was ruled unfit for CAF competition, which sent the continental ties to Uyo, a story told in our guide to football clubs in Port Harcourt and Rivers State, together with the Sharks and Dolphins merger of 2016 that created the club and the older Elekahia ground now being rebuilt.
The CAF Champions League run was short. Rivers United drew 1-1 at FC San Pedro on 5 September, Iyowuna Douglas equalising from the bench in the 69th minute. Back in Uyo on 13 September they fell two goals behind, pulled one back through a Mbaoma penalty before half-time and levelled at 2-2 through an Iyowuna Douglas penalty in the 87th minute, and still went out on away goals at 3-3. San Pedro had scored twice in Nigeria after the 1-1 at home. That was that.
Three days later the league side beat Warri Wolves 2-0 without their coach. The club said Finidi George was in Abuja on a CAF A-Licence coaching course.
Finidi, the scorers and the pay question
Finidi George took the job in July 2024. His team scores by committee. Mbaoma has three league goals, Dabai, Falolu, Ugwueze, Olasupo and Salman Abubakar two each, Awazie one, and the Ebah own goal makes 15.
On money, the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation set a minimum of ₦2m a month for NPFL players from 2026/27. Rivers United publish no individual wage, so the minimum is the only public number. A 30-man squad on the minimum would cost ₦60m a month. That is ₦720m a year. Our view
A side that concedes once at home and wins nothing away is good, not yet a champion. Not yet. Turn two or three of those away draws into wins and 18 points becomes 24. Rangers edged Rivers United for the 2025/26 title by a single point, and Port Harcourt knows exactly where it was lost.
