The Super Eagles have enjoyed fanciful jerseys in the past, and apart from their results on the pitch, fans have continued to be enamoured by the quality of designs created for the Nigeria national team.

In recent years, the designs of the Super Eagles jersey have been bolder and more striking. The jersey makers have gone beyond making comfortable jerseys for the players – they have created something akin to a fashion statement.

Since the inception of the Nigeria national team, the Super Eagles, their kits have come from three companies – Adidas, Nike and Erima.

At AFCON 2023, Nigeria went to the tournament with the hoodoo of never winning in a Nike jersey. The hoodoo continued with the Super Eagles finishing as runners-up.

If ever there was an AFCON for jersey design, Nike would win easily. The American multinational corporation (the official kit makers of the Super Eagles) have outdone themselves with the latest jersey design for the three-time AFCON winners.

The Nigeria senior national team will file out in new jerseys designed by its official kit makers.

Nike have been bold with their creatives for the Super Eagles in recent years. Their designs have wowed many fans, and their latest design, released on Monday, has set tongues wagging.

While Nigerians are still catching their breath from the last design, arguably the most creative at AFCON 2023, Nike has gone the extra mile with a new design.

The latest design is the first time in three years that the American corporation would use white as the principal colour for the team.

With the cost of the last kits ranging from €45 to €60, no one knows the cost of the new jerseys.

The new home jersey is white with green strips on the sleeves and the shorts. It also has the red Nike logo emblazoned on the chest with Naija (instead of Nigeria) written beneath it.

It is a bold attempt at appealing to the large, youthful, football-loving populace of Nigeria, who refer to the country as Naija.

The second design is bold and loud. It has an African touch of melody and rhythm. It is dark green with dashes of lemon splashed all over it.

The Super Eagles will once again stand out in this jersey, but the fans will hope the team replicates the creativity of the design in their style of play and the results they churn out.

The Super Eagles have enjoyed some beautiful designs before by Nike and Adidas. Few people would forget the era-changing design by Adidas in 1994.

The move by Adidas came after Erima had gone out of the conventional styles in 1988. It became the onset of a jersey revolution for the Super Eagles and started the love of Nigerians for wearing the national team jerseys as a fashion statement.

The latest design by Nike will rank among the top five. They have arguably made a bold statement, and Nigerians will expect nothing less from any corporation that should come after Nike.

While we strut out in the new Super Eagles jersey, perhaps the national team can add some titles to their name to put more pride in the kits.
