Ademola Lookman played for the England U19s and U21s, but in early 2017, Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr invited him to play for Nigeria, but he turned him down.

Lookman helped England win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

The forward performances for the country of his birth continued to draw attention in Nigeria, but in 2018, he rebuffed another attempt to get him to play for the country.

In 2020, another attempt by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to get him to change his mind also failed, with the forward holding out for a place in the Three Lions.
