Kenneth Igboke scored from the spot. Moments later James Emo made it two. Enugu Rangers had beaten MC Alger 2-0. It was Sunday 18 October 2026, the first leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round, and Rangers had played most of the afternoon without goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh, sent off early. The game was in Abeokuta, not Enugu. That detail matters.

A title, then a long road to Algiers

Rangers clinched the 2025/26 NPFL on matchday 38. Nwobodo scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Voice of Nigeria counted it as their ninth league title after 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, 2016 and 2024. The margin over Rivers United was one point.

Ilechukwu, champion twice in three seasons according to the Guardian, was given a one-year extension in June.

The continental run has not been comfortable. Against AS Sobemap of Togo in the first preliminary round, Rangers drew 1-1 in Abeokuta and 1-1 in Lomé, then squeezed through 5-4 on penalties in the Togolese capital, Blueprint reported. MC Alger came next. The clubs last met in the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs semi-final, and a 2-0 home win for Rangers in Enugu was wiped out by a 3-0 defeat in Algiers that sent MC Alger through.

History is the warning. Two goals is not safe.

The return leg is in Algeria on Friday 23 October, with a place in the group stage for the winner. Nwobodo, quoted by Africa Soccer, kept it simple: “The first thing is that we mustn't concede here,” he said. The league has had to wait. Rangers led the NPFL with 17 points from eight games after a stoppage-time equaliser earned a 2-2 draw at Barau in Kano on 11 October, leaving them one point ahead of Rivers United. Their matchday nine game against Bendel Insurance was postponed.

The Cathedral and the move to Abeokuta

For Rangers supporters the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is simply the Cathedral. Governor Peter Mbah promised in June to upgrade it. Blueprint reported the pledge. In July the general manager, Amobi Ezeaku, told NAN the club would “assess the level of work done at the stadium” first. The answer was Abeokuta. Rangers opened their title defence there against Katsina United on 30 August and needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Chibueze Oputa to draw 1-1. Daily Trust confirmed in September that the Sobemap tie would also be staged at the MKO Abiola complex while work in Enugu went on.

No return date for the Cathedral has been announced.

The Oriental Derby against Enyimba of Aba, whose history we told in our Rangers vs Enyimba derby guide, has lost its usual setting too. Every league venue this season is in our NPFL clubs and stadiums piece.

What Enugu Rangers players earn: the published figures

Here the honest answer is short. Rangers have not published individual player salaries. Nor has the state government. Not one figure. Treat any unsourced figure as a guess.

What is public is the floor. In June 2026 the National Sports Commission and the NFF approved a minimum wage of ₦2 million a month for every registered NPFL player from the 2026/27 season, Blueprint reported. That is roughly $1,500 at the official rate of about ₦1,332 to the dollar on 13 October 2026. Can clubs afford it? FCT FA chairman Adams Mouktar Mohammed told Blueprint that across 20 clubs, salaries alone would pass ₦14 billion a year.

Bonuses are better documented. After the 2025/26 title, Governor Mbah gave a ₦150 million package. The players shared ₦100 million, management staff ₦50 million, and everyone received a plot of land in Enugu State, Blueprint reported on 4 June. That is about $75,000 at today's rate. The per-player split was never published. The NSC has also promised at least ₦1 billion to the 2026/27 NPFL champions, with ₦500 million for second and ₦300 million for third, NSC chairman Shehu Dikko told reporters in Abuja, according to NAN.

For how those numbers compare across the league, see our NPFL highest-paid players guide.

The squad Ilechukwu has to work with

Ezeaku said in May that “we are majorly playing with young players,” and the Guardian's season preview noted that Rangers kept much of the title-winning group. The summer additions it listed were Azeez Falolu, Ifeanyi Okechukwu, Folarin Temitope, Abuchi Okeke and Chimezie Sunday, with Izuchukwu Chimezie also arriving from Nasarawa United. Nwobodo is still captain.

Our view

Rangers are doing the hard part without their home crowd, and that should not be glossed over.

Winning a league, then leading it again from a borrowed ground several hundred kilometres away while working through four Champions League qualifiers, is a real achievement for a state-owned club that has also had to absorb a goalkeeper's red card, a penalty shootout in Lomé and a fixture list rearranged around its travel. Its wage bill must now respect a ₦2 million floor. Its owner has paid one title bonus and promised a rebuilt stadium. The questions now are practical ones: when the Cathedral reopens, whether the new minimum is paid on time all season, and whether two goals are enough in Algiers. Friday will answer the last of those.
