Enugu Rangers are in Algiers ahead of Friday's CAF Champions League return leg against MC Alger, with a 2-0 lead from Abeokuta to protect. On Wednesday, 21 October, reports confirmed that CAF has appointed Ugandan security expert Dixon Okello to oversee the tie.

The squad flew out on Monday. The Guardian reported that the Nigerian champions travelled on a Turkish Airlines flight through Istanbul, choosing an early departure so the players could settle before the game at the Stade Ali Ammar.

Chief executive Amobi Ezeaku sounded relaxed. “Already here and feeling at home,” he told the paper. “They can only shout, blow smokes and jump. We will play and win them in Algiers.”

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu was more careful.

He said his side would treat the second leg as a fresh contest.

Why CAF has stepped in

Sunday's first leg did not end quietly. In a statement on 19 October, Rangers said visiting supporters forced an entrance gate at the MKO Abiola Stadium, damaged seats and got in without paying. The club asked CAF for “urgent intervention”, and Benin Web TV reported that the complaint, signed by Ezeaku, requested a return leg behind closed doors.

CAF has not gone that far.

Its response is still unusual for a preliminary round. Kawowo Sports and Afrik-Foot both reported on 21 October that Okello, a security officer certified by CAF and FIFA, joins the match delegation, while Africa Top Sports pointed out that such officers are not normally sent to games at this early stage of the competition. A Lesotho refereeing team led by David Molise will take charge. Blueprint added that the CAF Disciplinary Committee will study video footage from Abeokuta. No sanction has been announced. MC Alger have taken their own grievances to CAF, according to Afrik-Foot.

A lead built with ten men

Rangers did it the hard way. Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was sent off in the first half, and the hosts only broke through after MC Alger lost a man in the 52nd minute. Kenneth Igboke scored an 83rd-minute penalty. James Emo ran through for the second four minutes later, Pulse Sports reported.

NPFL chief operating officer Ayo Abdulrahman warned that Algiers would be hostile. “It's not going to be a tea party, don't expect them to offer you flowers,” he said.

What it means for Nigerian football

Rangers carry more than their own hopes. Rivers United went out to San Pedro of Ivory Coast in September after a 2-2 draw in Uyo, and a group stage place for the Flying Antelopes, with the first matchday set for 27 November, would help a league whose chief, Abdulrahman, has spoken openly about keeping Nigeria's four continental slots.

The domestic table matters too. Their Matchday 9 game against Bendel Insurance was postponed for this tie, with no new date yet. Soccernet reported that Rangers sit level on 17 points with Rivers United at the top, with a game in hand, while Sporting Lagos climbed to third after winning in Jos.

The maths in Algiers is simple. Even a 1-0 defeat would send the record nine-time champions through. Supporters who know the noise of the Oriental derby will still expect a long night.
