Teremas Igobor Moffi, fondly known as “Terem” and professionally known as Terem Moffi, is a Nigerian football player who plays as a centre-forward or a striker for French Ligue 1 side OGC Nice and the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles.
Terem Moffi beginnings
Terem Moffi was born in Calabar, Cross River state to a middle-class family. Like many Nigerian football players past and present, his parents wanted him to focus on his studies. However, he enjoyed his hobby of football very much and would spend a lot of time playing.
His parents would enrol him at the Aspire Academy in Calabar when he was seven years old, after coming to the realisation that nothing would separate him from football.
At 11 years old, he moved to the Nigeria Youth Soccer Academy where he trained and participated in tournaments until he was 17 when he moved to England to join Buckswood Football Academy.
That was where his career kicked off.
Terem Moffi career
Terem Moffi spent less than a year with Buckswood Football Academy in London before he was scouted by FK Kauno Žalgiris, a Lithuanian club.
Moffi played for the senior and youth teams of the club and scored one goal before moving on to FK Riteriai, another Lithuanian club, in 2019. By this time, Moffi had come of age and he began to show his qualities. He scored 20 goals in 29 league appearances for Riterai, sparking a bidding war among a number of European sides.
The Super Eagles frontman would eventually move to Belgium in January 2020 to play for KV Kortrijk in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. The move was in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, which means that the club’s fans barely got to witness Moffi play.
However, he was able to impress, scoring five goals in 11 league appearances between January and May to earn a move to the French Ligue 1 with FC Lorient in the summer of 2020. Moffi started slowly but finished with 14 league goals in the 2020/21 season.
He became one of the hottest strikers in France and in January 2023, he moved to OGC Nice on loan. The move could be made permanent in the summer of 2023.
Terem Moffi national team career
Terem Moffi, who is expected to make the AFCON 2023 squad list if Nigeria qualifies for the tournament, did not get any action with the Nigeria national football team's youth sides. He would have been a part of the U-17 team led by Victor Osimhen that won the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, but he was dropped from the final squad list.
After his exploits in his first season at Lorient, however, then-manager of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, called him up for June 2021 international friendlies. That was his first and last call-up for almost a year, as he would not join another Super Eagles training camp until May 2022.
He has been in the squad ever since, amassing 10 caps along the way.
Terem Moffi personal life
Terem Moffi’s father, Leo Moffi, is an ex-professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for NPFL teams.
Leo Moffi and Chuka Iwobi, the father of Alex Iwobi, are good friends from their days in the Nigerian university football scene. Terem and Alex are also childhood friends.
Alex helped him settle into English culture when he moved to Buckswood Football Academy. The two have maintained contact since, with their time in the Super Eagles drawing both families even closer.
He is one of four boys born to Leo Moffi and his mother, whose name is not known.
