The Napoli striker was born Victor James Osimhen in Lagos, Nigeria, on 29 December 1998 to Patrick Osimhen and his now late wife. He hails from Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, and is the last of six children.

Osimhen (which means ‘God is good') learned much of the football skills from his elder brother, Andrew. His parents moved to Lagos just before he was born, but life was hard for the family in his early years.

He hustled and hawked sachet water and other items to support his family. His elder brother dropped out from school to join the struggle and support the family, and in their spare time they played football along with friends in their neighbourhood.

Osimhen started his career at the Ultimate Strikers Academy in Lagos, where he successfully underwent trial. Soon after, he was invited by coach Emmanuel Amuneke, to represent Nigeria’s U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets.

He got his first start in the U-17 team in a 2014 friendly match. In 2015, he was part of Nigeria's U-17 team which participated in the African U-17 Championship in Niger.
